The two photos on this webpage were taken at the front of Upleatham School, the children facing along the grass strip towards Rifts Woods with their backs to the town library, which at that time was in the school grounds (just out of shot on the left). From the position of the leaves on the tree and the overlap of the chairlegs and the car just visible on the right we can safely say that the two photos were taken on the same day. The Junior School teachers at this time were: 1A Miss Ridgard, 1B Miss Bowers; 2A Miss Bean, 2B Miss Kiersley; 3A Mr Moss, 3B Mr Langham; 4A Miss Harburn, 4B Mrs Rogers. The headmaster was Mr Scott. In addition, David Wood, Cyril Swann and Gail Worts are not present either, but I've a feeling they may have left the school by then. Barbara Rand has this picture too, and confirms that it is class 3A. Steve Jarratt says, "This picture would be taken in our first term of 3A because we didn't move the class to the prefab classrooms at the Secondary Modern on the corner of Marske Mill Lane until the year was under way.". When I sent him this photo and challenged him to identify as many as possible, I counselled him not to be too downhearted at the difficulty he was sure to have, bearing in mind the difficulties three of us had had with the 3A picture. He replied a a few days later with every name except one and, furthermore, can remember where they all lived. |
